How to Introduce a Kitten to Other Pets in Your Home
A sudden nose-to-nose meeting is one of the most common reasons pets take a long time to get along afterward. Stretch the process out over a few days, and your odds of a real friendship go way up.
The introduction plan
- First few days — keep them apart. The kitten lives in its own room, other pets stay on the other side of the door. Let them get used to each other's scent first.
- Swap bedding or towels carrying each animal's scent — it speeds up the process.
- The first visual meeting should be through a cracked door or a screen, just a couple of minutes, supervised.
- Feed the animals on opposite sides of the door — it builds a positive association with each other.
- Full meetings only under supervision, in short sessions, gradually getting longer.
- Don't force it. Growling and hissing in the first few days is normal; the real red flag is prolonged aggression with no sign of easing up after a few weeks.
